Legendary playback singer S. Janaki dies at 88

Music fraternity, fans bid farewell as Mysuru honours singing legend with state funeral

Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, fondly known as the “Nightingale of South India,” passed away at the age of 88 in Mysuru after battling age-related health issues. Her death marks the end of an era in Indian music, leaving behind a legacy that spans more than six decades.

Born in Andhra Pradesh, Janaki began her playback singing career in the 1950s and went on to become one of India’s most loved singers. She recorded thousands of songs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi, becoming the voice behind countless memorable film songs.

Known for her soulful voice and versatility, Janaki worked with some of India’s greatest music composers and singers. During her illustrious career, she won several National Film Awards and numerous state honours, earning admiration from fans across generations.

Janaki was cremated with full state honours at her farmhouse in Kaniyanahundi village near Mysuru, fulfilling her final wish. Before the funeral, her mortal remains were kept at Maharaja’s College Grounds, where thousands of fans gathered to pay their last respects.

The final rites were attended by veteran singers K. S. Chithra, Sujatha Mohan and Mano, music composer Hamsalekha, Karnataka Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah, members of the film industry, political leaders and admirers. Her granddaughter, Apsara Vydyula, performed the last rites.

Tributes poured in from across the country, with musicians, actors and political leaders remembering Janaki’s unmatched contribution to Indian cinema and music. Fans also shared their favourite songs and memories on social media, celebrating a voice that touched millions.
