A 15- year-old girl who allegedly used abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar has apologised, saying she was influenced by people around her and deeply regretted her remarks. In a video shared on social media, the girl claimed she was 15 years old and asked the Prime Minister and the public to forgive her.
The apology came after videos from a protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar circulated widely online. The girl was allegedly recorded making objectionable remarks against PM Modi during the demonstration.
The incident subsequently led to a police complaint in Noida and the registration of a Zero FIR. The case was later transferred to Delhi Police since the alleged remarks were made during the protest at Jantar Mantar.
The controversy has gained attention because of the student’s claim that she is a minor. In her apology video, she appeared with folded hands and said she had made a mistake after being influenced by others at the protest.
She said she had gone to the demonstration with a friend and claimed that people around her were already using abusive language against the Prime Minister. According to her account, she followed what others were saying and later realised that her remarks were wrong.
She has appealed to the Prime Minister and the country to forgive her. She described the incident as a serious mistake and said she would not repeat it.
“I am just 15, forgive me,” she said in the video, while expressing regret over the remarks.
Her claim about her age has become an important part of the case. Reports about the police complaint indicate that the Zero FIR mentioned her as 25 years old, while she has subsequently claimed to be 15. Authorities are expected to establish her identity and age as part of the investigation.
The girl’s mother has also reportedly apologised over the incident and sought forgiveness for the remarks. The family has maintained that the student regrets what happened.
The case began after a video from the July 23 protest gained traction on social media. The demonstration was linked to the CJP and involved demands concerning student issues. The remarks directed at the Prime Minister drew criticism and led to calls for police action.
A complaint was filed by a lawyer in Noida, following which police registered a Zero FIR under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The sections cited in the complaint relate to intentional insult, statements allegedly capable of causing public mischief and defamation.
Since the incident occurred in Delhi, the Zero FIR was transferred to Delhi Police for further action.
The case has also raised questions about how the legal system should deal with political speech, particularly when the person involved claims to be a minor. The conflicting claims regarding the student’s age are likely to be examined as the investigation progresses.
The Prime Minister, meanwhile, has taken a conciliatory position on the incident. In a message shared on social media, PM Modi said he was willing to forgive the youngsters who had used abusive language against him and his late mother.
He said young people can make mistakes and suggested that they should be guided instead of being subjected to prolonged legal proceedings. His comments came amid the growing controversy over the Jantar Mantar protest and the video involving the student.
PM Modi also said that abusive language has no place in public discourse, but stressed the importance of helping young people understand their mistakes and choose a better path.
His appeal for forgiveness came shortly before the student’s apology video emerged, creating a significant shift in the tone of the controversy.
The incident has also renewed debate over freedom of speech, political protests and responsible public expression. Political opponents and supporters have continued to debate whether offensive remarks made during demonstrations should result in criminal cases.
The CJP has questioned the police action while acknowledging that the language used during the protest was inappropriate. Party representatives have also raised concerns about what they describe as inconsistent action against people making offensive political statements.
