The second leg of the Copa do Brasil round-of-16 tie was played at the Mangueirão in Belém on August 4, with the first meeting between the teams ending in a goalless draw. That left everything to play for in the return fixture, where a single goal would be enough to settle the tie. According to fresh reporting, Brazil‘s Superior Court of Sports Justice, or STJD, is examining the available footage. Because the referee’s match report reportedly did not include the post-match incident, any disciplinary case could depend on subsequent evidence and a formal complaint. Neymar could potentially face charges under Article 258 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice, which concerns unsporting conduct. A sanction under that provision could range from one to six matches, although no final punishment has been announced.
Remo has also indicated that it may take the matter to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). The club’s president, Antônio Carlos Teixeira, publicly criticised Neymar’s behaviour and said the club was considering formal representations concerning the player, referee Anderson Daronco and the VAR team.
That means the controversy could extend beyond Neymar himself. Remo may also face scrutiny over incidents surrounding the match, while the Brazilian football authorities assess whether disciplinary rules were breached.
For Santos, the immediate priority is undoubtedly the result. The club survived a difficult away atmosphere, produced the only goal of the tie and secured its place among the final eight teams in the Copa do Brasil. Neymar’s assist was crucial in making that happen.
Yet the victory also illustrates the complicated nature of Neymar’s latest chapter at Santos. His footballing ability remains evident. Even without starting the match, he was able to influence the decisive moment and create the opportunity that separated the two teams.
