Vismaya Mohanlal has taken her first major step into Malayalam cinema with Thudakkam, but acting is only the latest chapter in a creative journey that began away from the spotlight.
The daughter of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and Suchithra Mohanlal, Vismaya grew up in one of Kerala’s best-known film families. Her brother Pranav Mohanlal is also an actor. Despite that background, Vismaya’s own public profile developed differently. Before stepping in front of the camera, she explored writing, poetry, visual creativity and martial arts.
Her entry into acting has therefore attracted attention not simply because of her surname, but because of the path she took before arriving at her first film.
Vismaya made her literary debut in 2021 with Grains of Stardust, a collection of poems and illustrations. The book brought together her writing and artwork and offered an early glimpse into her creative interests outside Malayalam cinema.
Rather than immediately following her father and brother into films, she spent years developing interests that were largely separate from the movie industry. Her poetry and illustrations allowed her to express herself privately, while her training in martial arts eventually became particularly relevant to her acting debut.
Her physical preparation has become an important part of the story surrounding Thudakkam. Vismaya trained in Muay Thai, a discipline that demands conditioning, coordination and combat technique. That experience proved useful when she took on the physically demanding role in Jude Anthany Joseph’s survival thriller.
The film was formally announced in 2025, with Mohanlal publicly sharing the news of his daughter’s acting debut. The project brought together Vismaya, director Jude Anthany Joseph and producer Antony Perumbavoor, making it a high-profile launch even before filming began.
Production began in November 2025, with filming taking place in locations including Kuttikkanam, Kochi and Bengaluru. The shoot was completed in February 2026, setting the stage for Vismaya’s first appearance on the big screen.
For her very first, Vismaya was not given a conventional romantic or supporting role. Thudakkam places her at the centre of a survival story. She plays Meenu, a young woman whose routine life changes after an incident involving two schoolgirls leads her into a dangerous situation.
That choice gives her an unusually demanding introduction to Malayalam cinema. The character requires Vismaya to move between quieter emotional scenes and physically intense action sequences. Her Muay Thai background has allowed the film to make combat an important part of Meenu’s character.
Director Jude Anthany Joseph has also spoken positively about working with Vismaya. He said he did not try to teach her acting from scratch, instead guiding her when she needed help understanding an emotion or scene. He described her as a natural performer.
The film’s release has given Vismaya an opportunity to establish herself independently of her family’s legacy. Reviews have generally recognised her effort, particularly in the action portions, while also pointing to areas where she has room to grow as a performer.
The early box-office response has added another dimension to her debut. Thudakkam opened strongly worldwide and moved past the previous opening record for a female-led Malayalam film. Its performance has continued through the first few days, with the film reportedly crossing ₹26 crore worldwide by its fourth day.
That commercial response matters because Vismaya’s career is beginning under unusual scrutiny. Audiences are inevitably comparing her with her father, one of the most celebrated actors in Indian cinema, while also looking at her alongside her brother Pranav.
Yet Vismaya has appeared keen to establish a creative identity of her own. Her background in poetry is particularly different from the traditional route followed by many star children entering the film industry. Her first book showed an interest in words and visual expression long before she faced a camera.
Her transition from poet and illustrator to actor also gives her debut an interesting context. Acting demands a different kind of performance: instead of controlling the audience’s experience through written words and drawings, she must communicate through expression, movement, voice and physical presence.
Thudakkam is consequently more than a family legacy story. It is the first professional test of whether Vismaya can translate her creative interests into a sustained career in Malayalam cinema.
The film also places her in a generation of performers entering an industry that has increasingly welcomed actors with varied backgrounds. For Vismaya, however, the challenge is more personal. She has to build credibility while carrying a surname that comes with enormous expectations.
Her father has publicly celebrated the beginning of her acting journey, expressing pride as she entered cinema. But the response to Thudakkam will ultimately be measured by audiences and by the choices Vismaya makes after her first film.
A successful debut does not automatically define a career. The more significant test will be what comes next, whether she chooses more acting roles, returns to writing and art, or combines those interests in a broader creative career.
The surname may have brought immediate attention, but the next stage of her career will depend on what she does with that opportunity.
