In a brazen daylight robbery, a gang of five to six men stole ₹7.11 crore from a CMS Logistics cash van in south Bengaluru by pretending to be Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Income Tax officials. The entire heist lasted roughly 30 minutes, leaving authorities stunned.
The incident took place near Ashoka Pillar in Jayanagar around noon. The gang blocked the van using an SUV marked “Government of India,” claiming they needed to verify documents. Three staff members, including two armed guards, were forced into the SUV while the cash van was directed to continue its journey.
The robbers then ordered the van to stop at the Dairy Circle flyover, threatened the staff with firearms, and transferred all cash boxes into their vehicle. They also removed the van’s DVR, eliminating internal CCTV footage and complicating the investigation. After the heist, the staff were released unharmed.
Police have launched a large-scale operation, reviewing over 50 CCTV feeds and setting up roadblocks across the city to trace the gang’s escape. Special teams have been deployed to investigate whether the robbers had insider information about the cash van’s route and schedule.
Karnataka’s Home Minister described it as a first-of-its-kind crime in Bengaluru. Opposition leaders criticized the government over lapses in law and order, questioning how such a high-value cash transport could be compromised.
