Congress RS nomination rejected in MP

Meenakshi Natarajan calls move 'dictatorship'; BJP says rules were followed

A political controversy erupted in Madhya Pradesh after the nomination of senior Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election was rejected by the returning officer during scrutiny of nomination papers.

The rejection came as a setback for the Congress, which had fielded Natarajan, a former Member of Parliament and close associate of Rahul Gandhi, as its candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state. Election authorities reportedly rejected her nomination on technical grounds related to procedural requirements in the nomination papers.

Following the decision, Natarajan strongly criticised the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, alleging that democratic institutions were being misused for political purposes. Describing the development as an example of “dictatorship,” she claimed that opposition voices were being systematically targeted and prevented from participating in democratic processes.

Congress leaders also condemned the move, arguing that the rejection was politically motivated and aimed at ensuring an uncontested victory for the BJP-backed candidate. Party leaders said they would examine legal and procedural options available to challenge the decision.

The BJP, however, rejected the allegations and maintained that the nomination was rejected strictly in accordance with election rules. Party leaders asserted that the scrutiny process was conducted independently by election authorities and that all candidates were required to comply with prescribed norms.

The Rajya Sabha election in Madhya Pradesh had attracted attention because of Natarajan’s candidature and her prominent role within the Congress organisation. A former president of the Indian Youth Congress, she has held several key positions within the party and has been active in national politics for decades.

Political observers said the rejection has intensified the ongoing confrontation between the BJP and Congress in Madhya Pradesh, where both parties are preparing for future electoral battles. The issue is also expected to trigger a broader debate on electoral procedures, transparency and the functioning of democratic institutions.

With the nomination now declared invalid, the focus shifts to the next steps that Congress may take, including possible legal recourse and political mobilisation over what it describes as an unfair decision.
