The killing of Haryanvi singer and YouTuber Ankit Balyan outside a gym in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli has brought the spotlight back on the dangers faced by public figures with a strong local following. Balyan, 32, was shot multiple times on Wednesday evening shortly after completing his workout. He was taken to hospital, but his injuries proved fatal.
The attack unfolded in the Shamli Kotwali area as Balyan was reportedly making his way towards his vehicle. The assailants arrived on motorcycles, opened fire and escaped before they could be intercepted. Reports on the exact number of shots vary, with estimates putting it at roughly 18 to 20 rounds.
The sudden burst of gunfire left the area in panic. Police reached the scene after being alerted and began securing the area for forensic examination. Investigators are now working to establish the sequence of events, including how the attackers tracked Balyan and the route they used to get away.
CCTV cameras in and around the gym are being examined for clues. Police are also speaking to witnesses and people who may have been near the spot when the shooting occurred. Investigators are expected to look at Balyan’s recent movements, contacts and any disputes that could help explain why he was targeted.
The murder triggered an immediate response from Balyan’s supporters and local residents. His family and others gathered on the Delhi-Muzaffarnagar road and blocked traffic, demanding that the attackers be caught. The protest underlined the anger surrounding the killing and the demand for a quick investigation.
At present, police have not announced a confirmed motive. A personal dispute or rivalry is one possibility being examined. His reported plans to enter the district panchayat elections have also raised questions about a possible political connection. Officials, however, have not established any link between his political ambitions and the shooting.
A purported social media message claiming responsibility has added another layer to the case. The message was circulated in the name of the Gogi gang and referred to an alleged past dispute. Police are checking the authenticity of the post and whether it was actually connected to the people behind the attack. No gang involvement has been officially established so far.
Balyan was more than a regional singer. He had built a digital career through YouTube and social media, combining music with videos, podcasts and conversations on local issues. His content helped him develop a following among audiences in Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
He came from Bantikhera village in Shamli but spent significant periods in Haryana as his career grew. Rohtak and Sonipat were among the places where he lived and worked. He continued to visit his native area and was reportedly a regular at the gym where he was killed.
His rise reflected the changing nature of regional music, where artists can now reach large audiences without relying entirely on traditional music labels. Balyan used online platforms to promote his songs and connect directly with listeners.
He had collaborated with names such as Masoom Sharma, Raju Punjabi and Aashu Twinkle. One of his most popular tracks, Bhari Court Mein Goli Marenge Meri Jaan, reportedly received more than 54 million views on YouTube. His other releases included 112 NE, Goli Ke Barood, Jaat Jatni, Agla Janam Jaat, Savidhan, System and Riflein.
Much of Balyan’s music drew on themes familiar to the Haryanvi music circuit — local identity, power, rivalry, bravado and rural life. Some of his work also used imagery involving firearms and confrontation. That aspect of his content has prompted discussion since his death, but investigators have not said that his songs were responsible for the attack.
The case has also drawn political attention. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav condemned the murder and criticised the law-and-order situation in Uttar Pradesh. He also raised the issue of the attack in the context of the Jat community and questioned whether political rivalry could have been involved.
The challenge for the police in this investigation is to separate speculation from evidence. The alleged gang claim, possible personal rivalry and reported political ambitions are all being discussed, but none has yet been confirmed as the reason for the murder.
Investigators are expected to rely on CCTV footage, forensic findings, eyewitness accounts and Balyan’s digital and communication records to move the case forward. His recent phone calls, meetings and social media activity could also provide clues about whether he was facing any threat before the attack.
His death has left fans across the Haryanvi music community mourning a creator whose career was closely tied to the rise of regional digital entertainment. At the same time, the focus in Shamli has shifted firmly to the investigation.
