Netanyahu orders new military operation in Beirut suburbs

This decision raises fears of renewed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered military strikes on targets in Beirut’s southern suburbs, a move that has heightened concerns about a fresh escalation between Israel and Hezbollah.

Israeli officials said the strikes were directed at sites linked to Hezbollah in Dahiyeh, a densely populated area in southern Beirut that serves as a key stronghold of the Iran-backed group. Netanyahu’s office said the action was taken in response to what Israel described as repeated ceasefire violations and attacks targeting Israeli territory.

The announcement sparked anxiety across Lebanon, with many residents fearing a return to large-scale violence. Reports indicated that some families began leaving parts of the southern suburbs after warnings of possible attacks, while others closely monitored developments amid growing uncertainty.

The latest strikes come despite a ceasefire agreement reached earlier this year. Although the truce helped reduce hostilities, tensions have remained high, with both Israel and Hezbollah accusing each other of breaching the agreement. Sporadic cross-border attacks and military operations have continued in recent months.

Dahiyeh has often been at the centre of past confrontations between Israel and Hezbollah. Because the area is heavily populated, any military action there raises concerns about civilian safety and the potential humanitarian impact.

Lebanese authorities are reportedly stepping up diplomatic efforts to prevent the situation from worsening. Officials have been in contact with regional and international partners in an attempt to ease tensions and avoid a wider conflict. France has also called for discussions at the United Nations Security Council as concerns grow over the deteriorating security situation.
