Nitin Gadkari says petrol, diesel vehicles have no future

Minister pushes shift to cleaner fuels and sustainable transport solutions in India

Petrol and diesel vehicles may soon become a thing of the past, according to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who has strongly urged a shift towards cleaner and more sustainable transport options in India.

Speaking at a recent industry event, Gadkari said that vehicles running on fossil fuels do not have a long-term future. He stressed that India must act quickly to adopt greener alternatives, not just to reduce pollution but also to cut down on the country’s heavy dependence on imported fuel.

India spends a significant amount of money on importing petrol and diesel, which affects the economy. At the same time, rising pollution levels—especially in cities—have made it urgent to rethink how people travel. Gadkari believes that cleaner fuels can help solve both problems at once.

He encouraged automobile companies to focus more on electric vehicles, biofuels, hydrogen, CNG, and LNG. According to him, these options are not only better for the environment but can also become more cost-effective over time. He also highlighted that innovation and quality in vehicle manufacturing will play a key role in this transition.

The minister pointed out that public transport, especially buses, should lead the way in adopting cleaner technologies. Improving safety standards and design, along with switching to green fuels, can make transport more efficient and reliable for everyday users.

India has already started taking steps in this direction, with policies promoting electric vehicles and blending ethanol with fuel. There is also growing interest in hydrogen-powered transport, which could become an important part of the future.

Gadkari’s remarks send a clear message to the auto industry: change is coming, and companies need to be ready. For consumers, it could mean more eco-friendly and potentially cheaper transport options in the years ahead.
