Pete Hegseth calls India key Indo-Pacific partner

US eyes greater defence collaboration and joint production projects at Shangri-La Dialogue, in Singapore

The United States has described India as a crucial partner in maintaining security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, while pushing for deeper defence cooperation and joint military production between the two countries.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said India plays a vital role in Washington’s Indo-Pacific strategy. He stressed the importance of working closely with regional partners to address growing security challenges.

The US also expressed interest in expanding defence co-production and technology partnerships with India. Officials said stronger industrial cooperation would help both countries enhance defence capabilities and strengthen supply chains.

The remarks come amid increasing geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific, particularly concerns over China’s growing influence in the region. Washington said it remains committed to working with allies and partners to ensure a free, open and secure Indo-Pacific.

India and the US have significantly expanded defence ties in recent years through joint exercises, technology cooperation and strategic agreements. The latest comments signal continued efforts by both countries to deepen their partnership in defence and regional security.
