Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday used the G7 Summit platform to highlight what he described as a growing “trust deficit” in global affairs, urging world leaders to work together and build a more stable international order.
Speaking at the summit’s outreach session, Modi said the world is grappling with multiple challenges, including conflicts, economic uncertainty and disruptions to global supply chains. He stressed that rebuilding trust among nations is crucial to tackling these issues effectively.
PM Modi also raised concerns about maritime security, calling for safe and uninterrupted sea routes and better protection for seafarers. His remarks come at a time when shipping lanes across several regions face increasing risks due to conflicts and security threats, impacting global trade and energy supplies.
His comments drew attention as they came ahead of his meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the summit. The interaction between the two leaders is being closely watched amid discussions on trade, security and strategic cooperation.
Emphasising the need for collective action, Modi said countries must work together instead of taking fragmented approaches to global challenges. He argued that trust, transparency and respect for international norms are essential for lasting peace and prosperity.
The issue of maritime safety also has a human side. Thousands of Indian seafarers work on ships across the world, and concerns over their safety have grown following recent incidents in conflict-hit waters. Modi underlined the importance of protecting those working at sea and keeping global trade routes open and secure.
On the sidelines of the summit, he exchanged greetings with several world leaders, including Trump, before bilateral discussions expected to focus on economic cooperation, defence ties and regional security.
As leaders gathered to discuss pressing global issues, India’s message centred on dialogue, trust and cooperation. Through his remarks, PM Modi sought to position India as a country advocating stability and collective solutions in an increasingly uncertain world.
