The Saif Ali Khan attack case has taken an unexpected turn, with the man accused of stabbing the actor now seeking to plead guilty and asking the court for leniency.
Mohammad Shariful Islam, who is in judicial custody, submitted an application before a Mumbai sessions court expressing his willingness to admit guilt. His lawyer, Vipul Dushing, confirmed that the accused has also requested a lighter sentence. The court has sought the prosecution’s response and adjourned the matter to September 11.
The development comes just days after the case formally moved towards trial. On August 14, Additional Sessions Judge G P Deshmukh framed charges against Islam after he had earlier pleaded not guilty. His latest decision to seek a guilty plea therefore marks a significant change in his legal position.
The case dates back to January 16, 2025, when an intruder entered Saif Ali Khan’s apartment in Bandra during the early hours and allegedly attacked the actor with a knife. Khan, who was then 54, suffered multiple stab wounds and was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
The actor was discharged from hospital five days later. The incident triggered widespread concern because of the alleged security breach at the actor’s residence and quickly became one of the most closely followed criminal cases involving a Bollywood celebrity.
Islam was arrested two days after the attack and has remained in judicial custody since then. Investigators have alleged that he entered Khan’s home as part of an attempted robbery. The accused has previously denied the allegations, making his latest request to admit guilt a major shift in the proceedings.
The charges against him are serious. They include provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to robbery or dacoity with an attempt to cause death or grievous hurt, house-breaking and causing grievous injury. He also faces charges under provisions of the Foreigners Act and the Passport (Entry into India) Rules relating to his alleged illegal entry and stay in India.
The maximum punishment under the principal criminal charges could extend to life imprisonment, making the request for leniency particularly significant. However, a request to plead guilty does not automatically mean the court will accept the plea or reduce the punishment.
The prosecution is expected to respond to Islam’s application before the court decides how to proceed. The next hearing has been scheduled for September 11.
A guilty plea, if accepted by the court, could significantly alter the course of the case. Instead of a prolonged trial involving witness testimony and examination of evidence, the proceedings could move towards determining the appropriate sentence. The court would still have to examine the circumstances of the offence and the legal requirements governing a guilty plea.
The defence’s request for leniency could also become an important part of the next stage. By seeking to admit guilt, Islam appears to be asking the court to take his cooperation and stated remorse into account while deciding the punishment. Reports have said his application expresses remorse over the incident.
The dramatic change has also renewed attention on the events of that night. Khan was reportedly attacked after confronting the intruder inside his Bandra residence. The actor sustained serious injuries but recovered following treatment.
The incident had initially raised questions about residential security in Mumbai, particularly after an intruder managed to enter a high-rise apartment occupied by a prominent actor. The case also attracted intense media attention because of Khan’s celebrity status and the unusual circumstances surrounding the alleged break-in.
The immediate task for prosecution is now to respond to the guilty-plea application. For the defence, the focus has shifted from contesting the allegations to seeking a comparatively lenient sentence.
The court’s decision on the application will determine whether the case proceeds through a full trial or moves more directly towards sentencing. Until then, the allegations against Islam remain subject to the judicial process.
