A tense exchange at the United Nations drew international attention after Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, publicly clashed with senior UN officials during a hearing on a report examining conflict-related sexual violence and alleged violations in Gaza.
The confrontation unfolded during a UN session where officials discussed findings from a recent report that placed Israel under increased scrutiny over its conduct during the ongoing conflict. The report also addressed allegations related to sexual violence and humanitarian concerns arising from the war.
During the meeting, Danon strongly objected to what he described as bias against Israel in UN proceedings. The Israeli envoy interrupted officials several times, questioning the credibility of the report and accusing the organisation of unfairly targeting his country while failing to adequately address attacks carried out by Hamas. The heated exchange peaked when Danon told a UN official, “You will be quiet now,” prompting criticism from diplomats and observers present at the session.
UN representatives defended the report and stressed the importance of independently documenting allegations of violence and human rights abuses. Officials maintained that investigations were guided by evidence and international standards rather than political considerations.
The incident highlighted growing tensions between Israel and the United Nations, whose agencies and officials have repeatedly come under criticism from Israeli leaders over their handling of the Gaza conflict. Israel has frequently accused the UN of applying double standards, while UN officials have insisted on the need for accountability from all parties involved in the war.
The public disagreement quickly gained attention on social media and in diplomatic circles, with supporters of both sides weighing in on the confrontation. Some viewed Danon’s remarks as a forceful defence of Israel’s position, while others argued that the comments reflected an increasingly strained relationship between Israel and international institutions.
