TMC flags EVM tampering in Bengal, EC denies

Row in Kolkata after video claim. Poll body says process was routine and secure

A fresh political row has broken out in West Bengal after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleged tampering of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at a Kolkata strongroom ahead of counting.

The party shared a video, claiming that unauthorised people entered the strongroom and handled sealed machines without the presence of party representatives. Calling it a serious threat to democracy, TMC leaders demanded immediate action and tighter monitoring of EVMs.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also raised concerns and asked party workers to stay alert and guard strongrooms round the clock. Protests were reported outside some centres as tensions rose between political parties.

However, the Election Commission (EC) rejected the allegations, calling them baseless. Officials clarified that the activity seen in the video was part of a routine process related to handling postal ballots, which follows established guidelines.

The EC also said that EVMs are kept under strict security with multiple safeguards, including CCTV surveillance and restricted access, ensuring that no tampering can take place.

With counting day approaching, the issue has added to political tensions in the state. While the TMC continues to question the process, the EC has maintained that all procedures have been properly followed and the voting system remains secure.
