TN CM Vijay orders closure of 717 TASMAC shops

Liquor outlets near schools, temples and bus stands to shut in two weeks

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor shops located near schools, temples, religious places and bus stands across the state. The decision marks one of the first major policy moves by the new government after Vijay took office.

According to the state government, all TASMAC outlets operating within 500 metres of educational institutions, places of worship and bus stands must be shut within two weeks. Officials said the move was taken in the interest of public welfare and safety.

A government survey found that several liquor shops were functioning close to sensitive public spaces despite existing norms. Of the 717 shops identified for closure, many were located near schools, colleges, temples and busy transport areas.

The decision has sparked strong reactions across Tamil Nadu. Social activists and anti-liquor groups welcomed the move, saying people had raised concerns for years about liquor shops operating close to residential areas and educational institutions. Many residents believe the closures could help improve safety around schools and reduce public nuisance in crowded areas.

At the same time, the announcement has also drawn attention because TASMAC remains a major source of revenue for the Tamil Nadu government. It is said that shutting down more than 700 outlets could impact liquor sales income, though supporters argue the government is prioritising social welfare over revenue.

The order is also being seen as a key political message from Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which had promised stricter regulation of liquor outlets during the election campaign.

Officials said the closure process will begin immediately, and district authorities have been directed to ensure the shops stop operations within the given deadline.
