Trump criticises NATO over Iran conflict response

Alliance works to maintain unity as tensions test transatlantic relations

US President Donald Trump has renewed pressure on NATO allies, criticising what he described as insufficient participation by member nations during the recent conflict involving Iran. His remarks came during discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who is working to maintain alliance unity ahead of next month’s NATO summit.

The comments surfaced at a sensitive time for the alliance as leaders prepare for a crucial summit expected to focus on defence spending, collective security and ongoing geopolitical tensions. Trump has repeatedly urged NATO countries to increase military expenditure and meet agreed defence targets, making burden-sharing a central theme of his foreign policy.

Rutte travelled to Washington in an effort to smooth over differences and reinforce cooperation between the United States and its allies. While acknowledging the importance of fair contributions from member states, the NATO chief has stressed the need for unity in confronting shared security threats.

Diplomats say many alliance members are keen to avoid public disagreements ahead of the summit, where leaders hope to present a united front. The meeting is expected to address not only European security concerns but also instability in regions that could affect global peace and economic stability.

Trump’s latest criticism has reignited debate over NATO’s future direction and the balance of responsibilities within the alliance. Supporters argue his demands have encouraged several countries to boost defence spending, while critics warn that public disputes risk undermining confidence in the military bloc.

According to reports, Trump expressed frustration that the United States continues to shoulder a disproportionate share of military and security responsibilities while several European allies contribute less than expected. He argued that NATO members should play a greater role in addressing international security challenges, including crises in the Middle East.
