Veteran theatre director Vijaya Mehta dies at 91

Acclaimed playwright and filmmaker leaves behind an enduring legacy in Indian performing arts

Veteran theatre director, actor and filmmaker Vijaya Mehta, one of India’s most influential figures in modern theatre, passed away at the age of 91, leaving behind a rich legacy that shaped generations of performers and directors.

Known for her pioneering work in Marathi and Hindi theatre, Mehta played a defining role in bringing contemporary Indian drama to national and international audiences. Her productions were celebrated for their artistic depth, innovative storytelling and powerful performances.

Over a career spanning several decades, Mehta directed numerous acclaimed plays and also made a mark in cinema.
