OpenAI is planning a new desktop “superapp” that will bring together its main tools, ChatGPT, Codex, and the AI browser Atlas, into a single platform. The goal is to make it easier for users to access multiple AI services without switching between separate apps.
Currently, OpenAI offers different apps for chatting, coding, and browsing. With the superapp, users will be able to chat, generate code, and browse the web from one place, creating a smoother and more efficient experience.
The new platform will focus especially on productivity and advanced use cases. Codex, OpenAI’s tool for coding, is expected to be a key feature, allowing developers to write and debug code with AI support while also using ChatGPT for guidance and explanations. Atlas will let users search and explore the web seamlessly within the same app.
The move reflects a shift in OpenAI’s strategy. Having multiple standalone apps has sometimes led to fragmentation and slower updates. Combining these tools is meant to improve performance, reduce complexity, and make it easier for the company to maintain high-quality services.
OpenAI is also responding to growing competition in the AI space. Rivals such as are developing advanced AI tools, and a unified superapp could help OpenAI stay ahead, particularly with professional and enterprise users.
The superapp will initially be available for desktop, where complex tasks like coding and multitasking are easier. There is no confirmed launch date yet, and OpenAI has not announced a name for the platform. The mobile ChatGPT app is expected to remain separate for now.
