A fire at the Pachpadra refinery in Rajasthan has led to the postponement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to inaugurate the project.
The incident happened on Monday at the refinery site in Balotra district, shortly before the Prime Minister was scheduled to dedicate the project to the nation. Thick smoke was seen rising from the area as emergency teams rushed to control the blaze.
Officials said the fire was brought under control after quick action by safety and firefighting teams. No deaths or injuries have been reported, bringing relief to workers and nearby residents.
After the incident, authorities decided to postpone the inauguration event as a precaution. A fresh date for the Prime Minister’s visit is expected to be announced later.
The Pachpadra refinery is one of India’s biggest energy infrastructure projects and has been developed by HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited. The refinery is expected to strengthen fuel supply, boost petrochemical production and create jobs in the region.
The project has faced delays and rising costs over the years, making the inauguration an important milestone. Because of this, the fire just before the event has drawn significant attention.
Officials have started an investigation to find the cause of the blaze. Early reports suggest there may have been a leak in one of the technical units, but a detailed inquiry is underway.
The incident has also raised fresh questions about safety checks and preparedness during the final stages before operations begin. Experts say testing and commissioning periods are highly sensitive for such large industrial facilities and require strict monitoring.
Despite the setback, officials say the refinery project remains on track and the focus is now on completing inspections and ensuring all systems are safe.
