5.2 magnitude earthquake jolts Manipur

Early morning earthquake shakes parts of Manipur, Assam and nearby states

An early morning earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck Manipur on Tuesday, with tremors felt across several northeastern states, including Assam and Meghalaya.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at around 5:59 am, with its epicentre in Kamjong district of Manipur. The quake was recorded at a depth of about 62 kilometres.

The tremors were felt in many places, including Imphal, Ukhrul, Guwahati, and other nearby towns. In Guwahati, several residents said they woke up to shaking beds, moving furniture, and rattling windows.

Many people stepped out of their homes and apartment buildings as a precaution. Some residents shared their experiences on social media, saying the tremor lasted only a few seconds but was strong enough to cause panic.

So far, there have been no reports of deaths, injuries, or major property damage. Local authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation, while disaster response teams remain alert in case of aftershocks.

The Northeast is one of India’s most earthquake-sensitive regions due to its location in a high seismic zone. Small and moderate earthquakes are common in the area, though stronger tremors can sometimes cause serious damage.
