Rajnath Singh calls for SCO unity against terror

Defence Minister urges member nations to take firm collective action against terrorism and extremism

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called for stronger cooperation among Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member nations to fight terrorism, separatism and extremism during the SCO Defence Ministers’ meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. He said these threats continue to endanger peace, security and stability across the region.

Addressing the gathering, Singh urged countries to adopt a united and uncompromising stand against terrorism. He said there should be no selective approach or double standards when dealing with terror groups and those who support them. According to him, nations must work together to dismantle terror infrastructure, deny safe havens and cut financial and logistical support to extremist networks.

The Defence Minister said terrorism is a threat to all humanity and should never be linked to any religion or nationality. He stressed that collective action and trust among nations are necessary to effectively tackle the challenge.

In remarks seen as a strong message against cross-border terrorism, Singh said terror centres can no longer assume they are beyond the reach of action. While he did not name any country directly, the statement was widely viewed as aimed at Pakistan, which was also represented at the meeting. India has repeatedly raised concerns over terrorism originating from across its borders.

Singh also highlighted the need for peace and dialogue amid rising global tensions. He said the present time demands diplomacy, cooperation and mutual respect rather than conflict. He urged countries to work together for regional stability and shared development.

On the sidelines of the summit, Singh held separate meetings with defence leaders from several countries, including Russia and China. Discussions reportedly focused on regional security, defence ties and current geopolitical developments.

The SCO is a major Eurasian grouping that includes India, China, Russia, Pakistan and several Central Asian nations. It focuses on security cooperation, economic ties and counter-terrorism efforts. India has consistently used the platform to call for zero tolerance towards terrorism and stronger global coordination.
