The Centre has introduced new changes to India’s citizenship rules, with a focus on making the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) system simpler while tightening certain requirements.
One of the key changes is that eligible foreign nationals of Indian origin can now apply for an OCI card immediately after arriving in India. Earlier, applicants had to stay in the country for a longer period before becoming eligible. The move is expected to make the process quicker and more convenient.
At the same time, the government has introduced stricter compliance rules. OCI cardholders will now have to update their passport details within a fixed time after getting a new passport. Not following this rule could lead to penalties.
Officials say the changes are aimed at improving efficiency and making the system more streamlined, especially for people of Indian origin living abroad. The government is also working towards a more digital and standardised application process to reduce delays.
The updated rules also include clearer procedures for applying, renewing, or reissuing OCI cards. In some cases, applicants may need to provide documents in person instead of relying only on postal services.
OCI status allows foreign citizens of Indian origin to live and work in India with a long-term visa, although it does not give them full citizenship rights like voting.
