Chandranath Rath, personal assistant of senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead late Wednesday night near Kolkata in an attack that police suspect was carefully planned.
The incident took place near Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district when Rath was returning home in an SUV. According to police, several bike-borne attackers surrounded the vehicle and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.
Rath suffered multiple bullet injuries and was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His driver was also injured in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment.
Investigators believe the attackers had tracked Rath’s movements before carrying out the assault. Reports suggest sophisticated firearms were used, and fake number plates were found linked to the attack, indicating detailed planning behind the murder.
Police have launched a major investigation and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to identify and arrest those involved. CCTV footage from nearby roads and traffic points is being examined, while multiple teams have been sent to trace the suspects.
The killing has triggered strong political reactions in West Bengal. BJP leaders called it a targeted political murder and accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of failing to control violence in the state. The Trinamool Congress condemned the attack and demanded strict action against the culprits.
Rath was known to be one of Suvendu Adhikari’s trusted associates and had worked closely with him for several years. Before entering political work, he had reportedly served in the Indian Air Force.
The incident has once again brought focus on political violence and security concerns in West Bengal, especially after recent tensions in parts of the state. Security has been increased in sensitive areas as police continue their investigation into the murder.
Authorities said more details are expected once forensic reports and CCTV analysis are completed.
