Tamil Nadu is heading for a new political chapter as actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) moves to form the next state government with the support of key allies, including Congress and the Left parties.
The recently concluded Assembly elections delivered a fragmented verdict. While TVK emerged as the single largest party with around 108 seats, it fell just short of the 118-seat majority required in the 234-member Assembly. This left the state in a period of uncertainty, with intense discussions taking place across party lines over who would form the government.
Over the past few days, the situation has shifted quickly. The Congress, which won five seats, decided to extend support to TVK. This was soon followed by backing from CPI and CPM, which together hold four seats, and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which has two seats. With these alliances in place, TVK has comfortably crossed the majority mark needed to form the government.
Sources indicate that the decision was not sudden but the result of multiple rounds of internal discussions and coordination among national and state-level leaders. For the Congress, the move was seen as supporting a broader secular coalition in the state. The Left parties and VCK, on the other hand, reportedly backed TVK in the interest of avoiding political instability and a possible re-election scenario.
Meanwhile, TVK has been actively engaging with potential partners since election results were declared. The party leadership is said to have been in constant touch with allies, building consensus and ensuring that all supporting MLAs remain aligned ahead of government formation. The Governor had also made it clear that a formal claim to form government would only be accepted once proof of majority support was presented.
With numbers now secured, Vijay is expected to formally stake claim to form the government and take oath as Chief Minister once the Governor completes the verification process.
