India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are reportedly in the early stages of discussions for a potential defence deal involving the export of India’s supersonic BrahMos cruise missile system. The talks, if they progress, could mark another major milestone for India’s growing defence exports and deepen strategic ties between the two countries.
According to reports, the UAE is exploring the possibility of acquiring the BrahMos missile, jointly developed by India and Russia, as part of its ongoing military modernisation programme. Discussions are also said to include India’s Akashteer air defence command-and-control system, which has gained attention for its role in integrating and coordinating air defence operations.
While negotiations remain at an initial stage and no formal agreement has been signed, the reported interest reflects increasing international confidence in India’s indigenous defence technologies. Officials from both countries have not publicly commented on the details of the discussions.
The BrahMos missile is regarded as one of the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles. It can be launched from land, sea and air platforms and is known for its precision strike capability. In recent years, India has actively promoted the system to friendly nations as part of its broader push to become a major defence exporter.
The Philippines became the first foreign buyer of the BrahMos missile system in 2022, signing a deal worth nearly $375 million. Since then, several countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America have reportedly shown interest in the weapon.
The UAE’s reported interest comes at a time when Abu Dhabi is investing heavily in advanced military technologies to strengthen national security and enhance regional defence preparedness. The Gulf nation has been diversifying its defence partnerships and seeking cutting-edge systems to modernise its armed forces.
For India, a potential agreement would further boost its defence manufacturing ambitions under the “Make in India” initiative and reinforce its position as an emerging supplier of high-end military equipment.
Although the discussions are still preliminary, the development highlights the growing defence cooperation between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi, with both countries expanding collaboration across security, technology and strategic sectors.
