France music festival marred by violence and attacks

Hundreds arrested after syringe assaults and crimes during celebrations

France’s annual Fête de la Musique, a nationwide celebration of music and culture, was overshadowed by a wave of violence that led to hundreds of arrests and sparked concerns over public safety.

Authorities said 243 people were arrested across the country during the festival, which attracts millions of participants every year. The incidents included alleged syringe attacks, assaults, thefts and other violent crimes reported in several cities, including Paris.

One of the most disturbing aspects of the night’s events was a series of reported syringe attacks targeting women. French police said dozens of women claimed they had been pricked with syringes during crowded celebrations. Several victims were taken to hospitals for medical examinations and toxicology tests to determine whether any substances had been injected.

Investigators are working to identify those responsible and establish whether the attacks were coordinated. Officials have not yet confirmed the exact motive behind the incidents, but the reports triggered widespread concern among festivalgoers and authorities alike.

Police also launched investigations into allegations of sexual assault and rape linked to the celebrations. Emergency services responded to numerous incidents as large crowds gathered in streets, parks and public squares across the country to enjoy live music performances.

French Interior Ministry officials described the level of violence as worrying and said law enforcement agencies had been deployed in large numbers throughout the night. Despite the heavy police presence, authorities acknowledged that managing such massive crowds remains a significant challenge.

Many festival attendees expressed shock that an event traditionally associated with music, community and celebration had been disrupted by criminal acts. Social media was flooded with accounts from people who described chaotic scenes and heightened anxiety as reports of attacks spread during the evening.

The Fête de la Musique, first launched in 1982, is one of France’s most iconic cultural events and is celebrated in cities around the world. This year’s incidents have prompted renewed debate about crowd security, public safety measures and protections for women at large public gatherings.
