India joins US-Led global 6G initiative

New Delhi joins global push for secure and innovative next-generation telecom technology

India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in an international initiative aimed at influencing the development of next-generation 6G networks, strengthening New Delhi’s efforts to play a larger role in emerging telecommunications technologies.

The initiative seeks to promote secure, resilient and interoperable 6G systems while supporting competition, innovation and trusted technology development. India’s participation places its growing ambitions in advanced communications within a broader international framework as governments begin discussing the standards and technologies that will shape 6G.

The US Department of Commerce announced India’s inclusion after a meeting between US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and India’s Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The meeting took place on September 1 and 2 and was hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Prasada led the Indian delegation.

India has joined the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, a policy framework launched by the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration in July. With India’s addition, the initiative now includes 26 governments.

The original participants included the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Finland and Sweden.

The framework is being introduced at an early stage in the global development of 6G. It is not a formal agreement tied to a specific telecom project, investment package or deployment plan. It does not currently provide dedicated funding, allocate spectrum or set country-specific timelines for commercial rollout.

Instead, the initiative is designed to encourage policy coordination and cooperation on issues that could determine how future wireless networks are built, secured and managed.

Security is one of its main priorities. The framework also addresses resilience, interoperability and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in the design and operation of 6G infrastructure.

These concerns are becoming increasingly important as telecommunications networks support essential services and industries, including digital payments, healthcare, manufacturing, transport, public administration and autonomous systems.

This participation is significant for India because the country is already developing its own 6G strategy through the Bharat 6G Mission and the Bharat 6G Alliance. These programmes are intended to help India move from being primarily a consumer of telecom technology to becoming a developer of intellectual property, equipment and affordable communications solutions.

India has set a target of deploying 6G technologies domestically by 2030. Since technical specifications and global standards are expected to evolve over the coming years, involvement in international discussions could help India align its domestic plans with wider industry developments.

The discussions between India and the US also extended beyond telecommunications. During the G20 Innovation Ministerial, the two countries discussed cooperation in artificial intelligence, semiconductors and data centres.

Prasada encouraged greater US investment in India’s semiconductor programme and discussed strengthening the bilateral partnership in AI technology. The talks reflect the growing links between telecom infrastructure and other strategic technologies, including cloud computing, chip manufacturing, data processing and advanced software.

The G20 Innovation Ministerial concluded with a statement highlighting the potential of emerging technologies to improve productivity, create economic opportunities and support inclusive growth. India reiterated its interest in building partnerships in AI, semiconductors, digital public infrastructure, robotics and other emerging fields.

The 6G initiative could also give Indian companies and research institutions a stronger opportunity to participate in international standards-setting. Global standards will determine how devices, networks and digital systems communicate when 6G services become commercially available.

A greater role in developing those standards could benefit Indian telecom equipment manufacturers, technology companies and startups. It could also encourage domestic research, strengthen intellectual property creation and attract investment in advanced communications technologies.

The government’s broader strategy is focused on building a complete technology ecosystem rather than relying mainly on imported systems. This includes supporting research institutions and startups, expanding domestic telecom manufacturing, developing semiconductor capabilities and encouraging the creation of globally competitive intellectual property.

India’s entry into the US-led initiative therefore carries importance beyond the future of wireless connectivity. It places the country among governments seeking to influence how the next generation of digital networks is designed, secured and deployed.

Although 6G remains several years away from widespread commercial use, decisions being made now on standards, supply chains, security and interoperability could shape the industry for decades.

Early participation could help India ensure that its priorities are reflected in the emerging global 6G ecosystem. It also supports New Delhi’s larger ambition to become a technology developer and supplier rather than remaining primarily a major market for products created elsewhere.

The immediate focus will be on continued policy coordination, research collaboration and technical discussions among participating countries. As international 6G standards gradually take shape, India’s involvement will be important in determining whether its Bharat 6G ambitions translate into a meaningful position in the global telecommunications industry.
