A flight carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Norway was delayed after Moldova temporarily closed its airspace following a drone alert, highlighting the growing security risks created by the Russia-Ukraine war beyond the battlefield.
Zelenskyy was travelling from Moldova to Oslo to attend the funeral of Norway’s King Harald V. His departure was delayed after Moldovan authorities detected drones in the country’s airspace and temporarily suspended flights.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre later said Zelenskyy’s aircraft had come close to a drone while preparing to take off from Moldova. He described the situation as serious but did not provide details about the distance between the drone and the aircraft.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of political leaders travelling through countries close to the war zone. Zelenskyy regularly travels to European countries to seek military assistance, financial support and diplomatic backing for Ukraine.
Moldovan authorities confirmed that a drone alert had led to the temporary closure of the country’s airspace. Several flights were affected while officials assessed the situation and checked whether it was safe for aircraft to operate.
Zelenskyy’s aircraft was eventually cleared to leave after the immediate threat had passed. The Ukrainian president continued his journey and reached Norway safely.
The drone activity involved two unmanned aircraft entering Moldovan airspace. One drone crashed in a field in northern Moldova and caused a fire. Another crossed into neighbouring Romania before later moving back towards Moldova.
The crashed drone was recovered by Moldovan authorities. Initial examination found parts that appeared similar to a Geran-type drone, a model widely associated with Russian attacks during the war in Ukraine.
Investigators were examining the wreckage to establish the exact type of drone and whether it was carrying explosives. No deaths or injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
The situation also affected Romania, which is a NATO member. The drone that crossed into Romanian airspace was monitored by fighter aircraft before it moved back towards Moldova.
The incident has highlighted the growing airspace security threat in Eastern Europe. Moldova shares a border with Ukraine and has faced several security concerns linked to the conflict. Romania has also had to respond to drone activity near its territory since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
