Actor Dileep acquitted in 2017 assault case

Kerala court clears actor of charges, convicts six men in high-profile abduction and gang-rape case

After nearly nine years of legal proceedings, Kerala’s Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court on Monday acquitted popular Malayalam actor Dileep in the 2017 abduction and sexual assault case involving a fellow actress. However, six other men, including the main accused Sunil N.S., alias “Pulsar Suni,” were found guilty of gang rape, kidnapping, wrongful confinement, conspiracy, and recording sexual assault. Sentencing for the convicts is scheduled for December 12.

The case dates back to February 17, 2017, when the actress was allegedly abducted while traveling from Thrissur to Kochi and assaulted inside a moving vehicle. Parts of the crime were reportedly recorded, intensifying public outrage and media attention.

During the trial, which lasted nearly eight years, the court examined extensive evidence, witness testimonies, and media reports. While six men were convicted, the court found insufficient evidence to prove that Dileep had conspired or orchestrated the crime. Three other accused, charged with aiding the perpetrators or destroying evidence, were also acquitted.

Following the verdict, Dileep addressed the media, calling the case a “criminal conspiracy” against him. He claimed that some journalists, police officials, and his ex-wife, actress Manju Warrier, were involved in attempts to damage his career and personal life. He said the court’s ruling had “exposed” this alleged plot.

Outside the courthouse, supporters celebrated the verdict by distributing sweets and cutting a cake, reflecting the relief and emotional intensity surrounding the case.

The 2017 incident and the long trial had triggered major discussions about gender safety, workplace conduct, and accountability in the Malayalam film industry. With Dileep acquitted and key perpetrators convicted, the verdict closes a controversial chapter while highlighting the complex interplay of justice, media attention, and public perception in high-profile criminal cases.
