India wins maiden Squash World Cup

Historic 3–0 victory over Hong Kong inspires young athletes

On a proud evening in Chennai, on 14 December, Indian squash finally had its moment. Cheers echoed across the stadium as the national team sealed a historic first Squash World Cup title, defeating Hong Kong, China 3–0 in a final that showcased not just skill, but heart and composure.

The journey began with calm confidence from Joshna Chinappa, a familiar face in Indian squash who has carried the sport through its quieter years. Drawing on years of international experience, she controlled the opening match against Lee Ka Yi, setting the tone for what would become a night of celebration.

Next on court was Abhay Singh, whose sharp movement and relentless pace kept his opponent under constant pressure. With every rally, Singh pushed India closer to the title, eventually sealing his match and bringing the team within touching distance of history.

The responsibility of finishing the job fell on the youngest shoulders. Seventeen-year-old Anahat Singh, already a rising star, played with remarkable maturity. Unfazed by the occasion, she delivered a composed performance to win the deciding match, sparking emotional scenes as teammates embraced courtside.

For Indian squash, the victory was about more than a trophy. The team went unbeaten through the tournament, reflecting years of steady progress, investment and belief. With this triumph, India joined an elite group of nations to have won a major world squash team title.

The win drew warm praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who congratulated the players and described the achievement as a moment of national pride. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also lauded the team, calling the victory an inspiration for young athletes across the country.

With squash set to make its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028, India has proven that the future of Indian sport will only look brighter.
