Gareth Batty joins CSK coaching staff

Former Surrey coach Gareth Batty joins Chennai Super Kings as the franchise reshapes its support staff for IPL 2027

Gareth Batty is set to take on a new challenge in his coaching career after leaving Surrey County Cricket Club to join Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The former England spinner is expected to become part of the franchise’s coaching staff as the five-time champions prepare for a fresh start following a difficult run in recent editions of the tournament.

Batty’s departure from Surrey was confirmed on October 26, bringing an end to a long association with the English county. He had served as the club’s head coach since 2022 and established himself as one of the most successful coaches in the County Championship during his tenure. His move to CSK will give the franchise an opportunity to draw on his experience in team management, player development and competitive cricket.

The appointment comes at a time when Chennai Super Kings are restructuring their coaching department under new head coach Zaheer Khan. The former India fast bowler is expected to lead the franchise into IPL 2027 after CSK decided to make changes to its leadership and support staff. Batty’s arrival is another step in that process, although his precise responsibilities within the coaching group will be determined by the franchise.

Batty leaves Surrey with an impressive record. He took charge of the team in 2022 and guided it to the County Championship title in his first season. Surrey successfully defended the trophy in 2023 before winning it again in 2024, completing three consecutive championship victories. The achievement established Batty’s credentials as a coach capable of building a consistent and successful team.

Surrey continued to remain competitive during his tenure, finishing runners-up in 2025. The side also reached the knockout stages of the Vitality Blast in each of Batty’s five seasons as head coach, including two appearances at Finals Day. His record reflects an ability to manage players across formats and maintain high standards over demanding domestic seasons.

Player development was another important part of Batty’s work at Surrey. Several players associated with the county, including Gus Atkinson, Will Jacks, Ollie Pope and Jamie Smith, progressed into England’s international setup. Batty’s experience working with emerging talent could be useful at CSK, where the coaching staff must balance established international players with younger cricketers seeking opportunities in the IPL.

Batty also brings considerable playing experience to the role. He represented England in nine Test matches, 10 One-Day Internationals and one T20 International. His domestic career included several spells with Surrey, where he played an important role before serving as captain between 2015 and 2017. He retired from professional cricket in 2021 before moving into coaching.

His transition from player to coach produced immediate results. Taking charge of Surrey in 2022, Batty helped establish a winning environment and guided the team through three successive County Championship triumphs. His understanding of dressing-room dynamics and the demands of professional cricket will be valuable as he moves into the fast-paced environment of the IPL.

Batty expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to join Chennai Super Kings, describing the move as an exciting development for himself and his family. He also acknowledged Surrey’s contribution to his career and thanked the club for the opportunities and support he received over the years. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter in English county cricket.

At CSK, Batty will work within a revamped coaching setup headed by Zaheer Khan. The franchise has made several changes to its backroom staff, with former bowling coach Eric Simons and batting coach Michael Hussey among those departing. Former India pacer Mohit Sharma is set to take over the bowling coach position, while other members of the support team are also leaving as part of the restructuring.

The changes follow a difficult period for Chennai Super Kings. The franchise won its fifth IPL title in 2023 but struggled to maintain that level in subsequent seasons. CSK finished fifth in 2024, last in 2025 and eighth in 2026, prompting questions about the team’s direction and the need for a stronger campaign.

Batty’s experience in county cricket could provide a fresh perspective on planning, player preparation and squad management. However, coaching in the IPL presents a different set of challenges, including a compressed schedule, frequent travel, overseas-player combinations and the need to adapt quickly to different pitches and match situations.

For Chennai Super Kings, the priority will be turning the coaching changes into better performances on the field. Batty’s successful record at Surrey provides encouraging credentials, but his effectiveness will ultimately depend on how well he adapts to franchise cricket and works alongside Zaheer Khan and the rest of the support staff.

As CSK prepare for IPL 2027, Batty’s appointment signals the franchise’s determination to rebuild its coaching structure and return to the competition’s leading positions. His arrival adds county cricket experience to a group tasked with restoring consistency and challenging for another IPL title.
