Hyderabad could soon get a cricket stadium unlike any other in the country, with the Telangana government planning a massive international-standard venue in the upcoming Bharat Future City.
The proposed stadium is expected to be spread across nearly 100 acres and could have a seating capacity larger than Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, currently the world’s largest cricket stadium. The project is part of the Telangana government’s wider plans to develop Bharat Future City as a major urban and economic hub.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has asked officials to identify suitable land for the stadium within the Future City area. A location is yet to be finalised, while discussions are also under way on the design, capacity and estimated cost of the project.
The foundation stone for the proposed stadium is likely to be laid in December, marking the first major step towards turning the ambitious plan into reality.
The proposed capacity is one of the biggest talking points around the project. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad can accommodate around 1.32 lakh spectators. Telangana wants the new Hyderabad facility to go beyond that figure, potentially making it India’s largest cricket stadium.
The project is also expected to cost more than Ahmedabad’s stadium, although a final figure has not yet been announced. Officials are still working on the details and assessing the scale of infrastructure required for such a large venue.
The proposed cricket stadium is expected to be developed to international standards and could serve purposes beyond cricket. The facility could host major sporting events, large-scale entertainment programmes and other public events, giving Hyderabad another major venue capable of attracting large crowds.
The project comes as Telangana steps up its efforts to build Bharat Future City into a modern urban centre. The government has been positioning the development as a key part of Hyderabad’s future growth, with infrastructure, business, technology and public amenities planned for the area.
A major sports facility would add another dimension to that vision.
Hyderabad already has a well-established cricketing identity. The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal is home to the Sunrisers Hyderabad and has hosted international matches as well as Indian Premier League fixtures. However, with a capacity of around 55,000, the existing venue is far smaller than what Telangana is now proposing.
The new stadium could significantly expand Hyderabad’s ability to host some of the biggest cricket events. A venue with more than one lakh seats would offer the city the capacity to handle crowds on a scale usually associated with the largest sporting occasions.
A project of this size could also have an impact beyond the boundary ropes. Large cricket matches attract visitors, boost hospitality and transport businesses and create demand for restaurants, retail and other services. If the stadium becomes a regular venue for major international matches and tournaments, it could add to Hyderabad’s appeal as a sports and tourism destination.
The proposed facility is also expected to involve the Board of Control for Cricket in India, although the exact structure of the proposed partnership and the project’s implementation details are still being worked out.
The government still needs to finalise the site, capacity, design, financing and construction arrangements. The December foundation-stone ceremony, if it goes ahead as planned, is likely to provide greater clarity on the project.
What is already clear is the scale of Telangana’s ambition. The proposed Future City cricket stadium is being planned not simply as a larger version of Hyderabad’s existing venue, but as a landmark sporting facility capable of competing with the biggest cricket grounds in the world.
If the plans are completed as envisioned, Hyderabad could soon have a stadium that surpasses the Narendra Modi Stadium in capacity and gives the city a new global sporting address.
