Monsoon fury disrupts Mumbai life

Heavy rains trigger transport delays, flooding and weather alerts

Mumbai witnessed widespread disruption on Wednesday as heavy monsoon rains lashed the city a day after the southwest monsoon finally arrived, nearly two weeks later than usual. The intense downpour flooded roads, slowed traffic and affected local train services, prompting authorities to issue warnings and advise residents to remain cautious.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Several low-lying areas reported waterlogging, leading to long traffic snarls during peak hours. Commuters faced delays as vehicles moved slowly through flooded stretches across the city.

Mumbai’s suburban railway network, considered the city’s lifeline, also experienced disruptions. Water accumulation on tracks and poor visibility caused delays on some routes, inconveniencing thousands of office-goers and daily passengers. Emergency teams were deployed to monitor vulnerable locations and clear blocked drainage channels.

The impact of severe weather was not limited to Maharashtra. Parts of West Bengal experienced thunderstorms and gusty winds that uprooted trees and disrupted normal life in several districts. In Delhi-NCR, residents witnessed sudden spells of rain and strong winds, bringing relief from the heat but causing temporary traffic disruptions and power outages in some areas.

The delayed arrival of the monsoon had raised concerns over rainfall deficiency earlier this month, but the weather system has now intensified rapidly. Meteorologists attributed the heavy showers to a strong monsoon surge along the western coast, supported by favourable atmospheric conditions over the Arabian Sea.

Authorities across affected regions have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and remain alert to weather advisories. Disaster management teams are on standby as forecasts indicate the possibility of more heavy showers over the next 24 to 48 hours.
