Red card drama marks Belgium-Iran World Cup draw

Beiranvand stars as Belgium finish with ten men after dismissal

Iran produced a determined defensive display to earn a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Belgium in a dramatic FIFA World Cup Group G encounter in Los Angeles. The result kept both teams firmly in the race for a place in the knockout stage, with goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand playing a decisive role for the Iranian side.

Belgium entered the match as favourites and enjoyed long spells of possession, but they struggled to break down a disciplined Iranian defence. Whenever the Europeans managed to create openings, Beiranvand stood tall, making several important saves to deny the Belgian attack.

The match was filled with tension from the opening whistle. Iran thought they had taken the lead in the first half when star striker Mehdi Taremi found the net. However, celebrations were cut short after a VAR review ruled the goal out for offside.

Belgium continued to push forward in search of a breakthrough, creating a number of chances through quick passing moves and attacks down the flanks. Yet the finishing touch remained elusive, with Iran’s defenders and goalkeeper repeatedly frustrating their efforts.

A major turning point arrived midway through the second half when Belgian defender Nathan Ngoy received a straight red card. The defender brought down Taremi as the Iranian forward raced towards goal after intercepting a loose pass, leaving Belgium with ten men for the remainder of the contest.

Despite gaining a numerical advantage, Iran could not find the winning goal. Belgium, showing resilience despite being a man down, continued to battle and even threatened on the counterattack. Both sides pushed for a late breakthrough, but neither could find a way past the opposing defence.

The goalless draw means the battle for qualification from Group G remains wide open. Iran will head into their final group match with confidence after securing a valuable point against one of Europe’s strongest teams. Belgium, meanwhile, will be disappointed not to have converted their chances but will take encouragement from their fighting spirit after the red card setback.
