Russia unleashes major strike on Kyiv

Explosions rock the Ukrainian capital as authorities report widespread destruction

Ukraine’s capital Kyiv came under a major overnight attack after Russia launched a large wave of missiles and drones, causing deaths, injuries and significant damage across parts of the city. Ukrainian officials said the assault was among the most intense attacks seen in recent months.

Authorities reported that several explosions were heard across Kyiv as air defence systems attempted to intercept incoming projectiles. Residents were forced to rush to underground shelters as air raid sirens echoed through the city during the night. Rescue teams and emergency workers were later deployed to multiple locations where buildings and public infrastructure had been hit.

Ukraine said the attack involved the use of the Oreshnik hypersonic missile, a weapon that has attracted global attention due to its advanced speed and capabilities. Hypersonic missiles can travel at extremely high speeds and are considered difficult to intercept, making them a major challenge for defence systems.

Images and videos shared after the attack showed damaged residential buildings, smoke rising over parts of the city and emergency personnel searching through debris. Local residents described the situation as chaotic, saying the repeated blasts created panic as people sought safety.

Officials said the strikes caused damage to homes and other structures, while rescue operations continued in affected areas. Authorities were also working to assess the full scale of destruction and confirm casualty figures.

The latest attack comes as fighting between Russia and Ukraine continues with no clear signs of easing. Ukrainian officials strongly criticised the strikes and renewed calls for additional international military support, particularly stronger air defence systems.

Russia has intensified aerial attacks in recent months, targeting cities and key infrastructure across Ukraine. The latest assault on Kyiv is expected to increase concerns over a possible escalation in the conflict and its humanitarian impact.
