Twenty years after they first said “I do”, actors Suriya and Jyotika have chosen to say it all over again.
The popular Tamil cinema couple renewed their wedding vows in an intimate Christian-style ceremony, marking two decades of marriage with their family and close friends. The celebration, shared through a video on social media, offered fans a glimpse of the couple dressed in white and surrounded by the people closest to them.
Jyotika wore a white bridal gown while Suriya appeared in a white tuxedo. The ceremony included an aisle walk, exchange of vows and photographs with their children and guests. The couple referred to the celebration as “The Sequel”, a fitting name for what they described as another chapter in their journey together.
What made the celebration stand out was the way Jyotika described their marriage. Instead of presenting their two decades together as a picture-perfect love story, she chose to talk about the imperfections, adjustments and compromises that come with building a life together.
“This is not a celebration of a perfect marriage,” Jyotika wrote while sharing the video. She described it as a celebration of understanding, sacrifices and selfless love, as well as the people they have become for each other over the years.
Her personal vows carried the same warmth. Jyotika spoke about choosing happiness, celebrating life, staying healthy and being grateful for her family. She also acknowledged Suriya as her equal, confidant and best friend, apart from being her husband and the father of their children.
She described herself as an “imperfect wife” who may fight with her husband and then make up, growing closer after each experience. Friendship, she suggested, remains at the heart of their relationship.
Her message ended by looking ahead rather than simply celebrating the past. She raised a toast to another 20 years together, describing their future as an “imperfect us” with a strong understanding between them.
Suriya and Jyotika’s relationship began in the world of films. The two first met while working on the Tamil film Poovellam Kettuppar in 1999. Their professional association continued through films including Uyirile Kalanthathu, Kaakha Kaakha, Perazhagan, Maayavi and Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. Their on-screen chemistry eventually developed into a relationship away from the cameras.
The couple got married in Chennai on September 11, 2006. Their wedding came just three days after the release of Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, in which they played a married couple. The film remains one of the most memorable points in their shared Tamil cinema journey.
They later welcomed two children, daughter Diya in 2007 and son Dev in 2010. While both actors have remained prominent names in the film industry, they have generally kept their family life private, choosing to share occasional moments rather than putting their personal lives constantly in the public eye.
Their professional journeys have also continued alongside their family life. Suriya has remained one of Tamil cinema’s leading actors and has several projects in the pipeline. Jyotika, who took a break from acting after marriage, returned to films and has since worked across Tamil and Hindi cinema. Together, they are also associated with their production company, 2D Entertainment.
The vow renewal comes nearly a week after their wedding anniversary on September 11. Rather than simply marking the date with a conventional celebration, the couple used the occasion to reflect on what two decades together have meant to them.
