Trump showcases Qatar-gifted jet as Air Force One

Converted luxury jet sparks debate over costs, security and optics

US President Donald Trump has unveiled a converted Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar that is set to serve as a temporary replacement for Air Force One, bringing renewed attention to presidential travel and the politics surrounding it.

The aircraft, a luxury Boeing 747-8 previously used by Qatar’s royal family, was showcased during a visit to Joint Base Andrews. The jet has undergone modifications to support presidential travel while the long-delayed next-generation Air Force One programme continues to face production setbacks.

Trump described the aircraft as a practical solution to the delays affecting the official replacement fleet. He argued that the converted jet would help ensure continuity in presidential transport while avoiding further disruptions linked to Boeing’s troubled Air Force One project.

The unveiling, however, has sparked criticism from political opponents and ethics experts. Critics questioned the acceptance of a foreign-donated aircraft, arguing that it raises concerns about transparency, security and the influence of foreign governments. Some lawmakers have also called for greater scrutiny of the arrangement and the costs associated with adapting the aircraft for presidential use.

The aircraft represents a cost-effective alternative at a time when the US government is facing rising expenses and repeated delays in replacing the ageing Air Force One fleet. They argue that extensive security upgrades and inspections have been carried out to ensure the aircraft meets operational requirements.

The controversy comes against the backdrop of ongoing challenges surrounding Boeing’s Air Force One replacement programme. The project, which has faced years of delays and billions of dollars in cost overruns, has become a frequent target of criticism in Washington. The temporary use of the Qatari aircraft highlights the growing pressure on officials to modernise presidential transport capabilities.
