The US has reassured India that trusted partners will not lose access to advanced AI technologies, following concerns sparked by US-based startup Anthropic’s restrictions on some of its latest AI models.
The reassurance came during discussions at the Pax Silica Summit, where Indian officials raised concerns after some users in India temporarily lost access to Anthropic’s latest AI models. The restrictions had sparked worries over whether access to cutting-edge AI technologies could become uncertain for countries dependent on US-developed platforms.
According to senior Indian officials, the US clarified that while individual companies may make commercial or policy decisions regarding access to their products, the US government remains committed to ensuring that trusted strategic partners like India are not denied critical AI technologies once access has been granted.
Officials said the assurance reflects the growing technology partnership between India and the US, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical technologies and digital innovation. They added that discussions focused on building a predictable and reliable framework for technology cooperation rather than isolated actions by private companies.
The issue gained attention after Anthropic reportedly suspended access to some of its advanced AI models for users in several countries, including India, leading to uncertainty among developers, researchers and startups that rely on these tools for AI research and product development.
The US delegation clarified that export controls and technology access policies are determined by the government, while private firms retain the freedom to manage their own commercial offerings. However, it reiterated that the broader bilateral relationship with India remains centred on expanding collaboration in emerging technologies.
India and the US have been deepening cooperation in critical technologies over the past few years, with AI emerging as a key pillar of the strategic partnership. The latest assurance is expected to strengthen confidence among Indian businesses and researchers as both countries work towards closer collaboration in next-generation technologies.
