4 killed after SUV rams car on Expressway near Meerut

Family's journey ended tragically after speeding SUV struck reversing car on expressway Sunday

Four members of a family from Haryana were killed in a tragic road accident after a speeding SUV rammed into their car on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near Meerut. The crash, captured on CCTV, has once again raised concerns over unsafe driving and reversing on high-speed highways.

According to police, the family was travelling towards Haridwar when their car reportedly missed an exit and began reversing on the expressway. Moments later, a fast-moving SUV crashed into the rear of the vehicle with tremendous force, leaving it badly mangled.

The impact proved fatal for four occupants of the car, who died on the spot. Several others, including passengers travelling in the SUV, sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable.

Police said the victims belonged to Haryana and were on a family trip. Emergency teams reached the accident site soon after receiving information and began rescue operations. The damaged vehicles were later removed to restore traffic on the expressway.

CCTV footage of the accident has surfaced online, showing the car reversing on the expressway before the speeding SUV slammed into it. Investigators are using the footage to determine the exact sequence of events and fix responsibility.

Officials said reversing on an expressway is a serious traffic violation because vehicles travel at high speeds, leaving little time for drivers to react. They urged motorists who miss an exit to continue to the next designated interchange instead of attempting to reverse or make sudden turns.

Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the accident. Authorities are also examining whether overspeeding, negligence or other traffic violations contributed to the crash.
