Airtel Voice-Only plans start at Rs 185

New prepaid packs offer unlimited calls and 300 SMS without mobile data

Bharti Airtel has introduced three voice-only prepaid recharge plans priced at Rs 185, Rs 203 and Rs 206, giving customers more options to stay connected without paying for mobile data they may not need.

The new Airtel recharge plans include unlimited local, STD and roaming calls, along with 300 SMS. They do not offer mobile internet data and also include free HelloTunes.

The launch comes ahead of the October 21 compliance deadline set by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which has directed telecom operators to provide separate recharge vouchers for voice calls and SMS.

The new plans are aimed at customers who primarily use their phones for calling and messaging. They could benefit senior citizens, feature phone users and people who rely on Wi-Fi for internet access but need a mobile connection for calls.

Airtel’s three voice-only recharge plans

The Rs 185 plan is the most affordable option among the three new packs. It offers unlimited calls, 300 SMS and a validity of 28 days.

The Rs 203 plan provides the same calling and messaging benefits for 30 days. Customers pay Rs 18 more than the cheapest plan for two additional days of validity.

The Rs 206 plan offers the same core benefits with calendar-month validity. This option may appeal to subscribers who prefer a recharge linked to the calendar month rather than a fixed number of days.

All three plans exclude mobile data. Customers who need internet access on the go will have to choose a separate data option or a bundled recharge that includes an internet allowance.

The plans are available through Airtel’s website and mobile application.

Why TRAI wants separate voice-only plans

TRAI introduced the new requirements to give customers greater flexibility when choosing prepaid mobile services. Earlier, subscribers who mainly used their phones for calls could find themselves paying for data bundled with their recharge, even if they rarely used it.

Under the regulator’s revised tariff rules, telecom operators must offer special vouchers exclusively for voice calls and SMS, with validity periods of 30 days or less. The aim is to make these services available separately from mobile data packs.

The move recognises that mobile users have different needs. While some subscribers depend on high-speed internet for streaming, online payments, social media and video calls, others primarily use their connections to speak with family, friends and colleagues.

Separate voice-only recharges could make it easier for the second group to choose a plan that matches its usage and budget.

TRAI has also sought to improve the visibility of these vouchers on operators’ websites and applications, helping customers find and compare suitable recharge options more easily.

What the new plans mean for customers

Airtel’s new offerings provide a straightforward choice for customers who do not require a mobile data allowance. Instead of paying for a combined voice-and-data pack, they can select a plan based on calling needs, SMS benefits and validity.

The Rs 185 recharge may suit subscribers looking for the lowest upfront cost. Those who want a 30-day validity period can consider the Rs 203 option, while the Rs 206 plan offers a calendar-month alternative.

However, the best option will depend on individual usage. Customers who regularly browse the internet, watch videos or use online services away from Wi-Fi may find a bundled prepaid plan more practical.

Airtel’s launch also puts the spotlight on the response expected from other telecom operators, including Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and state-run BSNL, as the industry adjusts to TRAI’s requirements.

The availability of separate voice-only plans gives consumers another way to manage mobile expenses. Whether these recharges deliver meaningful savings will depend on how they compare with existing offers and how effectively operators communicate the available choices.
