Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is set to become India’s richest Chief Minister if he assumes the state’s top post under the Congress party’s power-sharing arrangement, according to his latest asset disclosures.
Shivakumar has declared assets worth approximately ₹1,413 crore, making him the wealthiest among serving and prospective chief ministers in the country. The valuation is based on affidavits and financial disclosures submitted during recent elections.
The Congress leader, one of Karnataka’s most influential politicians, has built a substantial portfolio comprising real estate holdings, investments, business interests and other assets. His declared wealth has steadily increased over the years, reflecting both asset appreciation and investments across sectors.
The development has drawn attention as discussions continue over Karnataka’s leadership transition. Speculation has persisted about Shivakumar eventually taking over as Chief Minister under an understanding within the Congress leadership following the party’s Assembly election victory in 2023.
If appointed, Shivakumar would surpass several prominent political leaders in terms of declared personal wealth. His asset base significantly exceeds that of most current chief ministers across India.
Supporters argue that the disclosures demonstrate transparency in financial reporting, while political opponents have questioned the scale of wealth accumulated by elected representatives. Shivakumar has consistently maintained that his assets and business interests have been declared in accordance with legal requirements.
A veteran Congress leader, Shivakumar has played a key role in the party’s politics in Karnataka and at the national level. He currently serves as Deputy Chief Minister and holds important portfolios in the state government.
The discussion around his wealth comes amid renewed focus on the financial disclosures of politicians and public representatives. Election affidavits have increasingly become a source of public scrutiny, providing insights into the assets, liabilities and financial backgrounds of candidates.
While no official decision has been announced regarding a change in Karnataka’s leadership, Shivakumar’s asset declaration has once again brought attention to the growing wealth of political leaders and the importance of transparency in public life.
If he takes charge as Chief Minister, Shivakumar would enter office not only as one of the country’s most influential regional leaders but also as its wealthiest chief minister.
