OpenAI builds screenless AI speaker

Voice-first gadget focuses on natural conversations and everyday assistance

OpenAI is reportedly developing its first consumer hardware product—a screenless AI-powered smart speaker designed to make conversations with artificial intelligence feel more natural and engaging.

Unlike conventional smart speakers that rely on displays or companion apps, the new device is expected to focus entirely on voice interactions. Reports suggest it will also be capable of subtle physical movements, such as turning towards the person speaking, giving users the impression of interacting with a more responsive and attentive assistant.

The project is being developed in collaboration with renowned designer Jony Ive, the former Apple design chief behind products including the iPhone and iMac. OpenAI’s hardware ambitions gained momentum after it acquired Ive’s AI device startup earlier this year, marking the company’s expansion beyond software into consumer electronics.

The AI speaker is expected to be powered by OpenAI’s latest language models, enabling it to perform a wide range of everyday tasks. Users could ask questions, manage calendars, set reminders, control compatible smart home devices and receive personalised assistance through natural conversations. Instead of responding with simple voice commands, the device is reportedly being designed to understand context and maintain more fluid interactions.

One of the product’s distinguishing features is its screen-free design. OpenAI reportedly believes that removing the display will encourage users to engage with AI through conversation rather than visual interfaces, creating a less distracting and more intuitive experience. The speaker is also expected to use sensors to recognise its surroundings and respond appropriately during interactions.

The reported device reflects a broader shift in the technology industry, where companies are exploring AI-first hardware instead of simply adding AI features to existing gadgets. By combining advanced conversational AI with thoughtful industrial design, OpenAI hopes to create a product that feels more like a helpful companion than a traditional smart speaker.

While the company has not officially confirmed the product or announced specifications, pricing or a launch date, reports indicate that development is progressing.
