C Joseph Vijay sworn in as Tamil Nadu CM

Vijay assumes office, announces free power, women’s safety force and anti-drug crackdown

Actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) secured a major victory in the Assembly elections. Along with Vijay, 34 ministers also took oath at the grand ceremony held at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.

Among the prominent leaders inducted into the Cabinet were former bureaucrat and senior TVK leader Aadhav Arjuna, party strategist Bussy Anand, senior leader N Anand, and education-focused leader Thanga Tamilselvan. Several first-time legislators and regional representatives were also included in the ministry, reflecting TVK’s attempt to balance experience, youth and regional representation.

The ceremony witnessed the presence of leaders from allied parties including Congress, CPI and VCK, besides film personalities and thousands of party supporters. Dressed in a black suit with traditional attire, Vijay received a massive reception from the crowd as he took oath in Tamil.

Soon after assuming office, Vijay announced three immediate priorities for his government, 200 units of free electricity for eligible households, the formation of a dedicated women’s safety force, and a special anti-narcotics unit to combat drug-related crimes in the State.

The new Chief Minister said his administration would focus on welfare delivery, transparent governance and stronger law-and-order measures. The announcements are being seen as TVK’s first major governance signals after its electoral breakthrough.

Supporters celebrated across several districts with rallies, sweets and fireworks following the oath-taking ceremony. Security arrangements were tightened around the venue and key areas in Chennai due to the large crowds gathered for the event.
