Vladimir Putin hails India as trusted partner

Russian President praises India ties and says BRICS has overtaken the G7 in economic strength

Russian President Vladimir Putin has described India as a trusted and reliable partner, while accusing Western countries of trying to weaken ties between Moscow and New Delhi.

Speaking at a meeting with international news agency leaders, Putin said India and Russia continue to enjoy strong relations despite global tensions and external pressure. He noted that cooperation between the two countries has grown across key sectors such as energy, trade, defence, technology and investment.

Putin said the India-Russia partnership is built on mutual trust and respect and has remained strong over the years. He also criticised Western attempts to influence India’s foreign policy, saying such efforts have failed because India follows an independent path based on its national interests.

Highlighting economic ties, Putin pointed to the steady growth in trade between the two countries. India has become a major buyer of Russian energy, while both nations are also working together in areas such as infrastructure, manufacturing, nuclear energy and transport.

The Russian President also praised the growing influence of BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and several newer members. He said the grouping now accounts for a larger share of global economic output than the G7 when measured by purchasing power parity.

According to Putin, this reflects a broader shift in the global economy, with emerging and developing nations playing a bigger role in driving growth. He said international institutions should adapt to these changes and give greater representation to developing countries.

The remarks come as Russia continues to strengthen ties with non-Western nations amid ongoing tensions with the United States and Europe. For India, maintaining close relations with Russia while expanding engagement with Western countries remains a key part of its foreign policy approach.

Putin’s comments highlight the enduring importance of India-Russia ties as both countries navigate a changing global landscape.
