A tragic accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district claimed the lives of at least six labourers after a portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed during a powerful storm.
The incident happened late at night as strong winds and heavy rain swept through the area. Workers were reportedly present on the bridge site when a section of the structure suddenly gave way, burying several labourers under concrete and metal debris.
Panic spread quickly as fellow workers and nearby residents rushed to help before rescue teams arrived. Police, district officials, and disaster response personnel later joined the operation, using cranes and earthmovers to clear the rubble and search for survivors through the night.
Officials confirmed that six workers died in the collapse, while several others were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals with injuries. Authorities initially feared more people could be trapped beneath the debris, leading to an intensive overnight search operation.
The bridge was being built as part of a local road connectivity project in the district. While the exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation, early reports suggest that strong winds and harsh weather conditions may have weakened the structure.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and fear as the bridge came crashing down without warning. Family members of the workers gathered near the site, anxiously waiting for updates as rescue teams continued their efforts.
