Bangladesh is moving closer to acquiring Chinese-made J-10CE fighter jets, the same aircraft used by Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, a development that is drawing attention across the region. The proposed deal reflects Dhaka’s efforts to modernise its ageing air force and strengthen its defence capabilities amid a changing security environment in South Asia.
According to reports, Bangladesh has shown interest in purchasing the Chengdu J-10CE, a fourth-generation multirole combat aircraft manufactured by China. The jet gained international attention after Pakistan deployed it during Operation Sindoor, where it was credited with demonstrating advanced capabilities in air combat and surveillance missions.
For Bangladesh, the potential acquisition is part of a broader military modernisation programme aimed at replacing older aircraft and improving operational readiness. Defence analysts note that the J-10CE offers advanced radar systems, long-range strike capabilities and compatibility with modern air-to-air missiles, making it an attractive option for countries seeking cost-effective combat platforms.
The move is being closely watched in India, which shares a long border and extensive strategic ties with Bangladesh. While officials have not publicly expressed concern, security experts say the purchase could alter the military balance in the region and further deepen defence cooperation between Dhaka and Beijing.
China has steadily expanded its defence partnerships across South Asia through arms sales, military training and infrastructure projects. Bangladesh already operates several Chinese-origin military platforms, making the J-10CE a relatively seamless addition to its existing inventory.
