A woman was killed and several others were injured after a BEST bus lost control and rammed into vehicles and pedestrians near Plaza Cinema in Mumbai’s Dadar area on Monday evening.
According to police and civic officials, the accident occurred in Dadar West during peak traffic hours when the bus allegedly veered off its route and crashed into multiple vehicles before hitting pedestrians on a busy road. The impact caused panic in the area as commuters and bystanders rushed to help the injured.
The bus driver was taken into custody for questioning, and officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary inquiries are examining whether a mechanical failure, brake malfunction or driver error led to the crash.
Authorities said at least four pedestrians sustained injuries in the incident and were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. A woman who suffered serious injuries later succumbed, taking the death toll to one. Some occupants of the damaged vehicles also received minor injuries.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus appeared to be moving uncontrollably before ploughing into vehicles lined up on the road. Several two-wheelers and cars were damaged in the collision. Emergency response teams, police personnel and local residents quickly reached the spot to assist victims and clear the area.
The accident resulted in significant traffic disruption in the Dadar area, one of Mumbai’s busiest transport hubs. Traffic movement remained affected for some time as damaged vehicles were removed and authorities conducted rescue and inspection operations.
BEST officials said they are cooperating with the investigation and will assess the circumstances that led to the incident. Civic authorities have also assured assistance to the injured and the family of the deceased.
