Finance influencer Harish dies at 27

Police probe cyberbullying claims as Jason Samuel denies harassment amid credentials dispute

V Harish, a 27-year-old finance influencer who built a following of more than a million people through investment-related content, has died at a rented villa near Chennai. His death has triggered a police investigation into allegations of cyberbullying and online harassment raised by his father against fellow influencer Jason Samuel, who has denied the accusations.

Harish, known online as “Finance with Harish”, had spent around five years building his presence on social media, sharing financial information, investment tips and personal finance content. His Instagram account had more than 1.3 million followers, making him a recognised name among audiences interested in money management and investing.

Police said Harish was found dead at a rented villa in the Muttukadu area, near Chennai, on Monday night. His body was taken to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Investigators registered a case of unnatural death and began examining the circumstances surrounding his death.

The case has drawn attention to the effects of online harassment, the responsibilities of social media users and the pressures faced by content creators whose professional lives depend heavily on digital platforms.

Father alleges sustained cyberbullying

Harish’s father, J Vinayagam, has filed a police complaint alleging that his son faced sustained online harassment, defamatory posts and threats from Jason Samuel, the chief executive of venture studio Zemuria Inc.

According to the complaint, Samuel published videos and posts on October 18 questioning Harish’s credentials and accusing him of misleading people through financial advice. Harish’s father alleged that the public criticism caused his son severe mental distress.

Vinayagam has asked police to investigate the allegations, examine a video recorded by his son before his death and preserve relevant digital evidence. He has also sought an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the blocking of Harish’s social media accounts.

The allegations have not been established by investigators. Police are examining the claims and statements from the people involved.

Harish’s final video raises questions

In a video recorded before his death, Harish reportedly accused Samuel of threatening to have his social media accounts blocked and prevent him from creating new ones. He also alleged that he had faced pressure during the dispute.

Harish’s father has asked investigators to examine the video as part of the probe into the alleged harassment.

The dispute had intensified after Harish’s established social media accounts were blocked in September. According to police sources cited in media reports, the accounts had been mass-reported. Harish subsequently attempted to continue publishing content through a new channel, which was also reported and blocked.

The loss of access to his established platforms came at a time when questions were being raised publicly about his qualifications to offer financial advice. His family alleges that the online criticism and account suspensions contributed to his distress.

Police are examining the sequence of events, including the online posts and the circumstances in which the accounts were disabled.

Jason Samuel denies harassment allegations

Samuel has denied cyberbullying Harish, saying his criticism concerned the influencer’s credentials and authority to provide financial advice.

In a statement posted on social media, Samuel said he was shocked and saddened by Harish’s death. He maintained that his videos were intended to question claims about financial qualifications and regulatory registration, rather than to harass him.

Samuel alleged that Harish did not hold the required Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) registration to operate as a registered investment adviser. He also questioned Harish’s representation of his association with the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).

Samuel said he had urged Harish to obtain the appropriate registration before providing financial advice. He denied intending or expecting the dispute to result in such a tragedy.

These claims and counterclaims remain part of the wider dispute. The police investigation will need to establish the facts surrounding the allegations and the events leading up to Harish’s death.

Questions over financial advice and online conduct

The controversy has also brought renewed attention to the rules governing financial influencers in India. People who create content about investments and personal finance can reach large audiences, but questions about their qualifications and regulatory status can have serious consequences for their credibility.

SEBI has a regulatory framework for registered investment advisers, while AMFI issues registration numbers to mutual fund distributors. These registrations serve different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.

The dispute involving Harish and Samuel highlights the importance of transparency when creators discuss financial products, investment strategies and professional qualifications. It also raises questions about how such concerns should be raised and addressed online.

Public criticism of financial claims can be important for protecting consumers. However, online disputes can escalate quickly when allegations spread across platforms, particularly when personal reputations and livelihoods are involved.

Harish’s death has left his family seeking answers as police examine the allegations. Investigators are expected to consider the available digital evidence, statements from those involved and the circumstances surrounding his death.
