Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine by the Portuguese Football Federation after leaving the national team camp following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. The punishment follows weeks of controversy over the football superstar’s role in the Portugal squad and his decision to leave before an international match.
The 41-year-old forward walked out of Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September 30, ahead of a Nations League match against Denmark. His departure came after he was left on the bench and was not brought on during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27.
The Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary council upheld the charge against Ronaldo, imposing the suspension and fine. The ruling followed an investigation into his conduct and considered his response to the allegations.
Despite the punishment, Ronaldo is not expected to miss Portugal’s upcoming matches because the suspension has been backdated to the period when he was provisionally suspended. According to reports, he could be available for the Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales in November, provided he is selected.
The decision brings a formal end to the disciplinary proceedings, although questions remain about Ronaldo’s relationship with Jesus and his future role in the national team.
Ronaldo said the dispute began after an agreement about his playing time was not followed. In a statement issued earlier this month, he explained that he had agreed to miss the matches against Norway and Denmark to manage his fitness.
According to Ronaldo, Jesus later told him that he would play for around 30 minutes against Norway. The forward said he warmed up during the match but was never brought on, leaving him feeling that the coach had broken his word.
Ronaldo also claimed that Jesus had agreed to explain the decision publicly but did not do so. He described the situation as a breach of trust and said it contributed to his decision to leave the camp.
Jesus, however, denied making the promises Ronaldo described. The disagreement became a major talking point in Portuguese football, with questions raised about whether the national team captain should have left the squad during an international break.
Ronaldo later apologised to supporters for his actions and acknowledged that he deserved to face disciplinary consequences. He also said he remained committed to representing Portugal and would accept whatever punishment the federation imposed.
The disciplinary council considered Ronaldo’s admission and clean disciplinary record as mitigating factors. These helped the federation arrive at the final sanction, which was at the lower end of the penalties available under its regulations.
The fine of €255, equivalent to around £215 or $285, has attracted attention because of Ronaldo’s enormous wealth. The forward has an estimated net worth of about $1.2 billion, according to media reports, making him one of the wealthiest athletes in the world.
However, the fine was determined by the federation’s disciplinary rules rather than by Ronaldo’s earnings or financial status. The suspension was also the minimum penalty available under the relevant regulations, which allow bans ranging from one to six months for leaving national duty.
The punishment has therefore been relatively limited in practical terms. Because the suspension was backdated, much of the 30-day period had already elapsed by the time the federation announced its decision on October 19.
Ronaldo has the option to appeal the ruling, although his earlier apology and acceptance of responsibility suggest that he is keen to move past the controversy.
The incident has also placed the spotlight on Jesus, who must balance the authority of the coach with the expectations surrounding one of football’s most celebrated players. Ronaldo remains Portugal’s captain and record goalscorer, with 146 international goals in 234 appearances.
His experience and scoring record continue to make him an important figure for the national team. However, the dispute has raised questions about his place in the squad as Portugal prepares for its next international fixtures.
Portugal’s next Nations League matches are scheduled against Denmark on November 14 and Wales three days later. Ronaldo could return to the squad for those games if Jesus decides to select him.
